Arbor and Arcus, The Triangle, Manchester
Our Artist in Residence, Mel Chantrey, was commissioned by Milligan Retail Resorts International to design a number of site-specific pieces for the refurbished Triangle development in Exchange Square, Manchester. This is a state-of-the-art shopping mall constructed within the Grade 2 listed Corn Exchange building, and is located adjacent to the huge boulder-strewn rill that we executed for Manchester City Council.
Mel’s pieces explore the use of perforated stainless steel sheet, tensioned around intricate curving frameworks. “Arbor” wraps around a slender graceful silver birch, itself over 13m high, which Mel specially selected from Lappen Nurseries in Kaldenkirchen. The tree was replanted and is now maintained by Specimen Trees of Knutsford. “Arcus” is located in Fennel Street to the rear of the development, and the two structures are linked by other mesh elements that penetrate the building fabric.
The pieces were fabricated by Midas Technologies of Peterborough in twelve weeks, working directly from Mel’s maquettes. Midas also co-ordinated the on-site erection. Milligan’s delight with the pieces has lead to further direct commissions on other exciting schemes.
