Ben Hampshire appointed Director

We’re proud to announce that Ben Hampshire is now a Director of The Fountain Workshop. This is an achievement that is richly deserved!

Ben was our first employee back in 1996, and he has been instrumental in helping us reach where we are today. Ben’s promotion to Project Director marks a progressive new phase for our company and we feel certain it will have a positive effect on all of us as we move forward. Congratulations Ben!

Easter fun at Lewis Cubitt Square

Lewis Cubitt Square is the latest civic space to open at King’s Cross! Here some kids are enjoying the water jets in the Easter sunshine.

The square’s open design and clean lines are the work of celebrated designer Laurie Olin, who also designed Bryant Park in New York. We were flattered and excited to be asked to work in collaboration with The Olin Studio on the square.

Laurie’s concept for the water feature was to use it to draw people in to this fabulous new space and that it does!

Granary Squirt – it’s a world first!

The team of geeks and geniuses at The Fountain Workshop are always looking for ways to embrace new technologies. Our latest development (and it’s a world first!) is Granary Squirt – an app that allows anyone with a smartphone to control and play with the fountains at Granary Square in the King’s Cross development.

To make it even more entertaining, we developed games. The first to be released is the 70s arcade classic, Snake.

Read on to find out how you can join the fun…

Pancras Square is open!

On the 22nd January, Pancras Square opened to the public. This beautiful new square is at the gateway to King’s Cross.

The square is conceived by Townshend Landscape architects and we worked with them to develop the water feature that cascades through the terraces towards a view of the St Pancras Clock Tower.

100 years of remembrance

On November 11th, the fountains at Granary Square morphed into poppies to commemorate our war dead and to mark 100 years of remembrance.

The poppy has become the familiar symbol of Remembrance Day. These flowers bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I – their brilliant red colour a symbol for the blood spilled in the war.

The Water Maze at Merchant Square

The Water Maze at the Merchant Square development in Paddington is open!

The maze is an interactive water sculpture with water jets arranged in three concentric circles. The jets rise and fall in blocks creating “doors” in the water walls…it’s like a simple, but ever changing maze. As “doors” open, passers-by are challenged to make their way to the centre without getting wet!

Just a short walk from Paddington station, the square is a traffic-free oasis. As well as the water maze, there is a striking bridge across the Grand Union Canal designed by Knight Architects.

Under development Stockton Town Centre

Stockton’s High Street is undergoing a transformation! The centrepiece of the redevelopment is the new water feature, which can operate in three modes: reflective pool, pool with low foaming jets and also as a dry surface with interactive pavement jets.

The project opens soon and the investment in the public realm is already seeing results, with dozens of independent businesses flocking to the area.

The AJ loves our fountains!

The AJ loves our fountains!

Rory Olcayto writes about the King’s Cross development in the latest issue of Architects’ Journal, and he’s very complementary about our fountains.

“The fountains are what makes the brand new space so public. All summer it has felt like a beach. Children – and quite a few adults too – turn up in swimsuits and trunks to lark around for hours. Local families gather on the scattered deck chairs, or under the grove of lime trees alongside, and often stay all day, picnicking until the sun goes down…it’s a real people’s meeting place.
